It's a well-known fact that oil changes are essential to keep your Jeep's engine running smoothly. How Can I Tell if I Need an Oil Change?

Some newer Jeep models come with an oil change reminder that shows up on the digital instrument cluster, which is the easiest way to tell if you need an oil change. You can also check the oil level on the dipstick. To do this, pull the dipstick out of the tube when the car has been off for at least 20 minutes, wipe the oil on the end of the stick off, and dip it again. When you pull it out a second time, you'll see two dots on the end of the dipstick, one for Low and one for Full. If the oil is at least halfway between the two dots, you're all set to keep driving! If the oil is at or below the low dot or the stick is dry, we recommend coming to our service center for an oil change!

What Happens if I Don't Get Regular Oil Changes?

The first thing that happens if you go long periods of time without oil changes is oil breakdown. This happens when the oil starts to burn and get dirty. Dirty, broken down oil will allow more friction between the engine's moving internal parts. After a while, this contact between moving parts will cause metal shavings to get into the remaining oil. This contaminates the oil and contributes to the build-up of sludge, a black gelatin-like substance that is made up of old oil, metal shavings, water, and dirt. You may also notice symptoms such as increased exhaust fumes, more engine noise than usual, rough idling, and decreased acceleration. Getting regular oil changes will prevent all of this by draining the old oil and putting clean oil in.

What Is Engine Oil Used For?

Engine oil has a few different jobs. Its main job is to lubricate the moving parts inside your Jeep's engine, like the crankshafts, valves, and pistons. These parts move thousands of times per minute, which creates a lot of heat. In fact, your engine's normal running temperature is between 195 and 220 degrees! Oil is pumped through the engine to keep that temperature within that range and prevent overheating. Lubricating the engine is the main purpose of oil, but it also keeps your engine running smoothly, cleanly, and efficiently, improving your gas mileage.
