2023 Jeep Wrangler Engine and Drivetrain Options

As we mentioned above, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler is eligible for four engine options. Standard equipment for the 2023 Jeep Wrangler is the trusted 3.6-liter V6 engine, delivering 260 lb-ft of torque along with 285 horsepower. The V6 engine comes paired with a robust six-speed manual transmission that drives the Command-Trac 4x4 system. The Sahara and High Altitude trim levels come exclusively with the otherwise optional 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. Linked to Selec-Trac active 4x4 and an eight-speed automatic transmission, the turbocharged engine delivers 295 lb-ft of torque and 270 horsepower. The Willys, Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude trims are eligible for Jeep's new 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) system. The Wrangler 4xe models achieve the gas equivalent of 49 MPG, 470 lb-ft of instant torque, and 375 horsepower. This is all thanks to the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine, two electric motors, and a rechargeable battery pack. Last but certainly not least is the Wrangler Rubicon 392. This monster of a vehicle comes with a 392 cubic inch 6.4L HEMI V8 engine ripping out a matching 470 lb-ft of torque and 470 horsepower. The Rubicon 392's eight-speed automatic transmission comes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters giving drivers an optional manual mode.

What 4x4 Systems Are Available for the 2023 Wrangler?

Above, we mentioned that all Wrangler models come with 4x4. Jeep offers three 4x4 systems for the Wrangler. Command-Trac 4x4 is standard equipment for most of the 2023 Wrangler lineup. This part-time system provides excellent fuel efficiency on smooth, dry roads by setting the transfer case gear shifter to two-wheel drive. When inclement weather is encountered while driving at higher speeds, the driver should shift into the 4-High mode to engage all four wheels to provide additional traction. When off-roading at low speeds, shifting into 4-Low mode will provide a lower gear ratio to provide better low-speed crawling control. Selec-Trac, standard on the Sahara, High Altitude, and Rubicon 392 is a full-time 4x4 system. Selec-Trac's active transfer case uses sensors to detect a loss of traction and counteract any slip by sending up to 100% of available engine torque to the axle that has the best grip. This happens automatically without any driver input. However, drivers can still select between high and low modes, depending on speed. The last available system is Rock-Trac 4x4, exclusive to the Rubicon trim. Rock-Trac is another part-time system that uses driver intervention to shift between 2WD, 4-High, and 4-Low. However, when in 4-Low mode, the transfer case provides a gear ratio of 4:1. This provides higher torque at low speeds by turning the wheels one time with every four rotations of the transmission output shaft.

Standard and Available Features for the 2023 Wrangler

One thing drivers love about the Wrangler is the lineup. The Wrangler can be as basic or as sophisticated as you want. The Sport trim comes with the basic necessities for everyday life and off-road adventures. Outside, the Sport features black fender flares, black 17-inch steel wheels, black bumpers, a removable top, a fold-down windshield, removable doors, underbody skid plates, and a rear-mounted full-size spare tire. The Wrangler lineup comes standard with two doors, besides the 4xe models, Sahara, High Altitude, and Rubicon 392, which come standard with the otherwise optional Unlimited body style with four doors. Inside the Wrangler Sport, you'll find one-way drain plugs for easy cleaning, six speakers, cloth upholstery, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, Android/Apple smartphone integration, and a 4.2-inch digital driver information display between analog gauges. If you opt for a higher trim level of the Wrangler, you'll get things like Alpine premium audio with nine speakers, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, 20-inch alloy wheels, full body-color exterior trims, navigation, and more depending on the trim level you select.
